has it really come down to this...

I was out for lunch last week at a restaurant here in the 'knife, one of the nicer places in town. Not fancy, but nice and clean with a fairly professional clientele.

I went to the bathroom and saw the following sign posted over the toilet:

PLEASE FLUSH TOILET AFTER YOU USE IT

As a society have we become so completely programmed that we can no longer think for ourselves? Is this something we really need to be told. Don't we learn this at a young age? Has a whole generation grown up who can't think for themselves or take any initiative?

I can understand the signs in bathrooms asking people to was their hands, there are valid public health issues, particularly when the sign reminds staff to do it, but to flush? Come On!

Maybe I just don't get this world today.

is 40 the new 20?

This was something a friend of mine asked the other day. He's found now that he's 40 there's all these twenty-somethings pouring attention on to him. I had a similar experience myself the other day with some serious facebook flirting from a 20 year old.

Are older men what younger men are into? There's a long tradition of younger/older men, so-called "sugar daddies" and "boy toys". I always thought you needed to be older than 40 to be a sugar daddy. I consider myself in my 'tween' years; too young to be sugar daddy, too old to be a boy toy. But is 40 now sugar daddy territory? At 40 I'll be barely a lawyer, so I won't be in any position to play sugar daddy.

But what is driving this interest in older men? Are these young men looking to these older men as a role model, as a teacher or as a conquest? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

In honour of today's post, I offer you some Patsy Gallant:

eurovision 2007 - what went wrong

Now that I have you all hooked on Eurovision, I know that I don't need to tell any of you that this year's Eurovision finale was held this weekend. However, I do have to admit to being a little baffled by this year's contest.

This year Serbia won, and here is the winning entry:

Hmmm, are you as stumped as I am. Where's the camp, the catchy riff, the song sung in English? Aside from a possible lesbian vibe, which I can't say for sure, not speaking serbian. There appears to be no gimmick, except maybe a good song. Hmmm, where's the eurotrash I've come to know and love?

Wait, here it is, Ukraine's entry is a Draq Queen:

That's better!

i really should be in england

Although England is my ancestral homeland, I'm beginning to realize it's my spiritual, and musical homeland as well. Bad britpop is a well known guilty pleasure of mine, and the BBC's latest reality show seems to be tailor made for me.

Any Dream Will Do is an american idol like show to select the next person to star as Joseph in the West End production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Being a bit of a show tune queen, this is perfect for me. I'm such a sucker for these shows that I even watched part of the it's so bad it's good, You're the One that I Want, the american version of this show to select the next leads of Grease on Broadway.

All of these are based on the BBC orginal series, How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria, that was a search for the next star of the Sound of Music.

Anyways, enough history. In each show the Jospeh wannabes do solos and a group number. You may remember I'm a fan of Meat Loaf and Dead Ringer for love. Well, they had the Joseph's do it, in a show tuney kind of way. In all its british brilliance I present it to you:

bad blogger

Sorry, I've been a little bit off lately in not posting regularly. Still trying to get into a routine, now that I'm back into the 'knife. Plus life's been dealing the family a few blows that least two weeks, so my attention has been elsewhere.

But on to the updates. I am officially 1/4 of a lawyer. I've passed first year, and overall am pleased about my marks. Two comments on the marks, contracts, definitely my worst class, and even with a good idea of what would be on the exam, I still did badly. Second, I freakin' ROCKED property! Who would have thought?

responsibility free

Well, that's probably no quite accurate, but I certainly have far less responsibilities than I had before. I'm beginning to realize this is how people get things done. I'm back at work for the summer, but in a different position that has far less responsibility. I actually have uninterrupted stretches of time to work on my project(s) - until the last few days I only had one. The number goes up, but I still have time to work on them all.

Also, at the end of the day, I can go home. I don't need to take work with me. I don't believe this will last and gradually my plate will fill up, but right now I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

numa numa

I learned about this latest youtube craze from the Yellowknife Moms. "Numa Numa" is a romanian song that is Eurovision worthy in its catchiness. I'm told this is the big thing on youtube. Everyone is lipsynching to the song and loading their videos. Here's a few of the Mom's favourites:

lord denning rocks: the pictures

Well I'm finally getting round to posting some photos from curling. You've read about our antics, now you can see what I've been talking about. These are from the semi-final game for our league against the girls with their own gear. Thanks to Jana for the photos. The photo above is the team. Check out the intense concentration from Steve and I plot our game. Really we would just stand there and talk long enough to make the opposition think we knew what we were doing.

this post withheld for the benefit of my readers

I was likely to write a rather drunken ode to how good it is to be home, but realize that I've had a fair amount of gin and beer and think it best to wait to tomorrow.

break out the ruby slippers

Sorry to be going on so much about being back home in Yellowknife, but this has been a really good week. It's surprising how much Yellowknife feels like home. Every day I run into a few more people I haven't seen in nine months, and it's good to see them again. It's also nice seeing people excited that I'm back.

It'll be five years in the North for me, and I'm really surprised how it really has become home.

Those who said "you can never go home again" never lived in the North, and are certainly not "friends of dorothy".
